Another turn around the sun. As we usher in the new year there are plenty of opportunities to try new things here in Bristol this January. From macramé workshops to Improv Taster sessions, if you’ve got ‘learn a new skill’ on the list of resolutions, you’re spoilt for choice!

Here are some of our favourites for the month ahead.

Learn something new


Improv Taster Session. Bristol Improv Theatre, Clifton. 6th January.

Looking at giving Improv a whirl? Every month, the Bristol Improv Theatre run the Improv Taster Session for anyone looking to try their hand at improvisation before committing to a course.

Facilitated by an experienced Bristol Improv Theatre instructor, the class will explore the fundamental skills of improvisation using a smorgasbord of improv games and exercises. It's a great chance to try improv and connect with others in a playful way.

Willow Sculpture Workshop, WWT Slimbridge. 13th January.

Join Zoe Bate for an exciting sculpture workshop and spend the day creating a willow sculpture of your choice. You’ll start off with a sphere and then be guided on how to transform it into an animal, wreath – whatever you fancy!

Macramé Earrings Workshop, Prior Shop. 18th January.

Driftwood and Macramé Plant Hanger Workshop. Fancy Plants, Gloucester Road. 27th January.

Enjoy the Natural World in Bristol


Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2023 at Bristol Museum & Art Gallery until 21st April 2024

This internationally-renowned photography competition consists of 100 stunning photographs that showcase the Earth’s extraordinary diversity. The exhibition at the Bristol Museum & Art  Gallery features soundscapes, videos, expert insights and stunning photography that capture animal behaviour, spectacular species, and breathtaking diversity of the natural world.

Winter Garden Tours at University of Bristol Botanic Garden Sunday 14th January

With over 4,500 species of plants, the beautiful displays at the University’s Botanic Garden are designed to tell the story of plant evolution. Theatre and Comedy Events in Bristol this January


Blue Monday Comedy Night, Bristol Beacon. 15th January.

This Blue Monday, join Bristol Mind for a night of comedy as they raise money for the essential mental health and wellbeing services they provide to communities in Bristol.

Blue Monday, the third Monday in January is typically the most depressing day of the year. Bristol Mind’s comedy night aims to tackle those January Blues by providing a room of laughter with critically acclaimed comedians.

Burns Night, Cadbury House. 20th January.

Spend an exciting Night at Cadbury House where age old traditions will come together to celebrate Robert Burns, and Scottish History. This night will start with the Selkirk Gace to open your meal and a flurry of bag pipes to “Address the Haggis” followed by a toast of whiskey.

The Paper Cinema, The Wardrobe Theatre. 31st January – 4th February

Short tales of other worlds; ghosts, dreams and the supernatural - brought to life through hand-drawn illustrations, masterful puppetry, cinematic projection and live music.

Performed by two puppeteers and a multi-instrumentalist, The Paper Cinema return to their 'out-of-a suitcase' origins to delight you with atmospheric tales of ghosts, dreams and the supernatural.

Wellbeing Events in Bristol this January


Yoga Brunch Club X Elise Briccolani, The Mount Without. 20th January

January's Yoga Brunch Club at The Mount Without is the perfect treat to look forward to after a long January.
